The Way We Are: Dump your Genre and Age Group into the funnel

In writing, the rules are pretty much the same, no matter your genre and no matter the age group you write for. Sure, an incredible amount of things that have to be different with every genre and every age group. But the bones— they’re the same.

Just like writers. We’re the same, too! Okay. We just might be vastly different. But it feels like we're the same. The bones of a writer are the same. But even though we’re all the same, it’s still fun to see where we are different. Like the differences in what genre we write and what age group we write for.

So let’s hear it!

Are we writing vastly different things from one another, or a lot the same? I think it’d be interesting to know. Leave what genre and age group you write in the comments, and as often as I can, I will update the graphics to reflect the comments.

Me? I write middle grade adventure. Sometimes it's tinged with fantasy. Sometimes a little science fiction. Sometimes a little mystery. But ALWAYS a lot of adventure.

Can’t wait to find out what everyone else writes!

It'll be very intereasting to see the results unfold.
So far for me, it's been Adventures for Middle Readers. But the last one is a YA Adventure.
The ones I have mapped out and are queued up to write, are Sci-fi, Mystery, Crime, and more Adventure. As I haven't written these, do they count?

Cool graphics! I write mostly YA. My first book is a YA urban fantasy and my second is a dystopian. I am about half-way into a paranormal romance as well. I'm actually still on the fence about whether my dystopian novel is YA or Adult just due to the age and themes. Most of it takes place when my MC is in her early twenties, but a lot is flashback to teen years. Sometimes it's hard to write on the cusp of an age group.

YA all the way! Right now I'm working on a dystopian, but I'd like to say I write in most of the sub-categories.

I love your pictures. I'm such a picture person :)

Well. Mostly YA. I have a completed YA Dystopian and YA Contemporary.

I also have a completed Mystery/Thriller.

In my brain are two more YA Contemporary and YA Sci-fi. I guess I can't write fast enough...

If you ever need another critique partner Peggy, let me know. I've critique three Middle Grade, two of which were adventure.

I write adult thrillers - often supernatural, murder-mystery type thrillers. They are the type of book I most like to read myself but I do branch out and try other genres occasionally.

I think I write too many genres.

MG, YA, and Adult Fantasy and Sci-Fi, with elements of Sword and Sorcery, fairytale, horror, paranormal, Romance, and Thriller.'

That's a mouthful, huh? :)

Okay, guys. I've updated the writing age groups, but I have to run to parent teacher conferences. I'll update the rest as soon as I get back. Keep 'em coming!

Young adult Science Fiction. I've completely bored myself with every contemp idea I've come up with, and that's the only other genre I think I could write.
